It's a pebble. A big red pebble. In fact, it's the greatest big red pebble in the world! It is also as much a symbol of Australia as a jumping roo.
Ayers Rock is now more commonly known by its traditional Aboriginal name of Uluru, which was given to it by the local Anangu people. In years gone by, people used to climb Uluru but this has now been banned because of the landmark's spiritual significance to the Anangu. This has led some tourists to proudly wear stickers stating "I didn't climb Uluru" after their visit. Uluru is said to be particularly magical at sunrise and sunset.
Uluru isn't far away from another Outback landmark in the Northern Territory - the rock domes of Kata Tjuta National Park, otherwise known as The Olgas.
