The French once landed in the South Island of New Zealand and started setting up a colony there not far from Christchurch. Imagine if they had stayed and the South Island spoke French while the North Island spoke English. For a start, the bread would be better on the South Island. But then again, the frog and snail populations would take a severe hit. And Richie McCaw would be French. Quelle horreur!
Some of the things that make the South Island great are Kaikoura whale watching, Arrowtown, Queenstown, Church of The Good Shepherd, big mountains, the Southern Alps, Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo.
