The Pōhutukawa Flower Sticker

$3.50 NZD

Ah, the good old Metrosideros excelsa flower. Otherwise known by its true Maori name of the Pohutukawa flower aka. the New Zealand Christmas Tree and a true sign of summer. Unlike in Europe though, we don't keep dead ones in the lounge during the festive period. Native birds like the Tui enjoy spending time in the beautiful red flower blossoms.

The Mainland Pohutukawa is very closely related to other trees in the myrtle family such as northern rata and southern rata as well as the Kermadec Pohutukawa, which is another metrosideros species. Although the flower is usually a shade of red or even a crimson flower, there have been various colour variations recorded including pink and yellow pohutukawa which is native to Motiti Island.

The Pohutukawa is found throughout the North Island of Aotearoa including the Auckland region and occurs in coastal forests in the Coromandel, generally north of New Plymouth on the West Coast and Gisborne on the East Coast.

In Maori mythology the flowers of rata and pohutukawa symbolise the blood of Tawhaki, a spirit ancestor who showed the way to heaven but died in the attempt. It was said that, as he fell, he plucked his eyes out and cast them onto the rata tree, where they are still seen today as its red blossoms.
