Known as Pāua in New Zealand, these creatures are actually classified as marine snails of the genus haliotis. They go by a variety of other names in other parts of the world. Apparently they are known by the charming name of "muttonshells" in Australia, while the South Africans call them "perlemoen". According to Wikipedia, they are even known as "ormer" in the UK. Good Logo.Co grew up in the UK and we definitely have never heard of that before, but that's probably because abalone are hard to come by in the concrete jungle of Liverpool. The thick inner shell of this snail is made of a substance called "nacre", more commonly known as "mother-of-pearl". It is very beautiful and highly prized by native tribal cultures, often using them to make jewellery in shapes like the "koru". The minimum legal size for abalone in New Zealand is 125 mm, which would make these stickers illegal. So don't let a fisheries officer see you with them...
