It's all well and good to celebrate the fact that Guy Fawkes was caught trying to blow up the British Parliament on 5 November, 1605. I mean who doesn't like fireworks right? The only problem is that fireworks don't really work all that well a few weeks before summer in New Zealand. It gets dark too late. And who wants their kids up at 10 p.m.? Enter Matariki. If we made it into a public holiday we could celebrate the Māori New Year and throw a few fireworks in as well. In the middle of winter. When you can actually see the fireworks. Sounds like a Win-Win to us!
This sticker shows the stars of Matariki, also known as the Pleiades star cluster, the Seven Sisters and even "Messier 45".
