A pepeha is an important part of whakapapa - knowing who you are and where you belong. Whakapapa connects us to our waka, iwi, hapu, marae, whanau (family) and ancestors. Pepeha writing is a common classroom activity carried out in school in Aotearoa.
A pepeha is written in Te Reo Maori and often also includes an English translation and sometimes pronunciation tips. Pepeha writing fits in well with the aims of Te Taura Whiri (the Maori Language Commission) to achieve a million speakers of Te Reo in New Zealand by 2040.
Although a Pepeha as a way of giving a personal introduction takes place in a Maori culture context, every person, including pakeha, has a story about the identity of where they come from and where they belong. This makes it a universal concept.
